Rule 1: PHILOSOPHY
 

The Philosophy of the Warrenton Youth Sports Club (WYSC) Basketball League, which is for girls and boys ages 4-18, is to provide an atmosphere promoting fun, togetherness, learning, and good sportsmanship within a recreational setting. 

Our motto is: ATHLETE FIRST, WINNER SECOND.

In keeping with this philosophy WYSC has instituted a ZERO TOLERANCE policy.

 

 
Rule 2: ZERO TOLERANCE
 

The following policy should be read and followed by all persons participating in WYSC Basketball activities:

Before, during, and after all games the following will be enforced:

  •  Players, coaches, assistant coaches, parents, and spectators MAY NOT make insulting or negative remarks, directly or indirectly, to or about opposing players, coaches, officials, or spectators or commit other acts that could be considered unsportsmanlike.
  •  Players, coaches, assistant coaches, parents, and spectator MAY NOT directly or indirectly make comments to or about the officiating crew or otherwise badger the officiating crew.
  • Players, coaches, assistant coaches, parents and spectators MAY NOT use profanity at any time. Use of profanity may get you ejected from a game, suspended from the next game or ejected from the league.
  • Officials will give one warning to a player, coach, assistant coach, parent or spectator for misconduct. Upon the second infraction the player, coach, assistant coach, parent or spectator shall be ejected from the game site.
  • Any player, coach, assistant, parent or spectator that is ejected from the game will be automatically suspended from participation in the next WYSC Basketball League game. 
  • Any person ejected from a game site shall not return to the game site following the game for any reason.
  • Failure to abide by any condition of this rule may result in forfeiture of the game and additional sanctions.
  • If there is a physical altercation between a player, coach, assistant coach, parent, or spectator and an official, such person shall be automatically ejected from the game site and shall be automatically suspended from participation in the WYSC Basketball League and may be expelled from WYSC pending review by the WYSC Adjudication Committee.

 
It is important that coaches are aware of the WYSC Zero Tolerance rules and their responsibilities.

 

GENERAL RULES
 

The National Federation of States High School Association rules and local rules approved by the Warrenton Youth Sports Club (WYSC).  Additionally, except where otherwise indicated, the following rules are deviations that apply only to the NBA division level of play:
 

  1. The local deviation in rules for Ages 5-6 are:
    1. There will be once a week practices for 60 minutes for this age division
    2. Saturday Session will played as 20 minute halves with a running clock. 
    3. The division will use junior or small ball as a game ball (size 27.5)
    4. Coaches will be allowed on the court with the players instructing them during the scrimmage.
    5. Referees will be provided for this age group.
    6. There will be no official time clock or score keeping.
    7. The purpose of this division is to teach basic skills.
    8. There is NO pressing or Trapping. (Definition of Pressing: Having the player pressure the ball and trapping)
    9. Teams must play zone only defense, inside the 3-point line. Teams must play a "soft defense" until the offensive team gets the ball past the top of the key.

  2. The local deviation in rules for Ages 7-8 are: 
    1. There will be two shot fouls taken from a 12-foot foul line, to an 8-foot high goal. 
    2. The division will use junior or small ball as a game ball (size 27.5)
    3. There is no pressing or trapping outside the 3-point line. (Definition of Pressing: Having the player pressure the ball and trapping)
    4. Each team is allowed 4 time outs per game. 
    5. Substitutes will be only allowed at or around the four minute mark of each quarter. Coaches should try to stop play when appropriate either 30 seconds before or after the 4 minute mark.  Stopping the game during the middle of a play or fast break to bring in substitutions should be avoided.  A player may be substituted for if he/she sustains an injury at anytime during the game, acquires 3 personal fouls in the first half or  acquires 5 personal fouls at any time in a game. 
    6. Teams must play zone only defense, inside the 3-point line. Teams must play a "soft defense" until the offensive team gets the ball past the top of the key.
    7. There will be four (4) eight minute quarters with a running clock stopping only for:
      • Shooting fouls; clock will be stopped once a shooting foul is called. 
      • When player is shooting two foul shots the clock is stopped on the first shot and started once the referee hands the player the ball for the second shot.
    8.  There are no overtime periods.
    9. A player will foul out after his/her 5th personal foul.
    10. Teams will need to provide their own score keeper and someone to run the timeclock.
    11. Championships* will not be held for this division. (revised summer 2021)

  3. The local deviations in rules for Ages 9-10 are:
    1. Foul shots will be taken from a 12-foot foul line, to a standard 10-foot goal.
    2. The division will use a game ball (size 28.5)
    3. There is no pressing allowed in the back court at anytime during the game.  The offensive team must be allowed to pass the ball into the front court.
    4. Each team is allowed 4 time outs per game: an additional one in each 3 minute overtime (Over time is for playoff and championship games only). 
    5. Substitutes will be only allowed at or around the four minute mark of each quarter. Referees should try to stop play when appropriate either 30 seconds before or after the 4 minute mark.  Stopping the game during the middle of a play of fast break to bring in substitutions should be avoided.  A player may be substituted for if he/she sustains an injury at anytime during the game, acquires 3 personal fouls in the first half or  acquires 5 personal fouls at any time in a game. 
    6. A player will foul out after his/her 5th personal foul.

    1. Foul shots will be taken from the standard 15-foot foul line, to a standard 10-foot goal. 
    2. The division will use a game ball size 2nnutes of the 2nd and 4th quarters.
    3. Each team is allowed four time-outs per game, an additional one in each 3 minute overtime. 
    4. Substitutes will be only allowed at or around the four minute mark of each quarter. Referees should try to stop play when appropriate either 30 seconds before or after the 4 minute mark.  Stopping the game during the middle of a play of fast break to bring in substitutions should be avoided.  A player may be substituted for if he/she sustains an injury at anytime during the game, acquires 3 personal fouls in the first half or acquires 5 personal fouls at any time in a game. 
    5. A player will foul out after his/her 5th personal foul.
